The winners of the national reading competition of German schools in Egypt have been announced. Aly Kassem from DEO Cairo won the German as a Foreign Language category, Henua Tarek from DSB Cairo won the German as a Mother Tongue category.

DS Hurghada had the honor of hosting the national reading competition among German schools in Egypt on June 1. Six German schools from Alexandria and Cairo participated. In total, seven German schools with a total of 13 students participated in the reading competition with the DSH.

In two categories (“German as a foreign language” and “German as a native language”), the participants from grades 6 and 7 first read an excerpt from a book they had chosen themselves. After this first round, the students each prepared a passage from the book “The Day I Accidentally Lied to the Whole World” by Lisa Thompson, which was unknown to them.

The jury, consisting of Vito Bagnardi (German Embassy Cairo), Frank Herzig (Goethe Institute Hurghada), Maja Köhl (School Board DSH), Constance Bashta (German teacher) and Sabrina Sassen (Communications Manager) evaluated reading technique, text interpretation and text selection. The decision was not easy for the judges: all the children had prepared very well and selected exciting texts. Even though there could only be one winner in each category, all participants received certificates and gifts. These included German magazines and souvenirs from the DS Hurghada.
